Clinic History

George Douglas Brandon D.V.M (Dr. Doug) was reared on a small farm in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. Early in High School, he developed a passion for Veterinary Medicine and was encouraged by a science teacher to pursue that goal. In those days, there were no veterinarians in that area, and one must travel close to 100 miles to visit a vet. As consequence, many “lay veterinarians” who had a certain skill with animals would treat and perform simple surgeries. All too often, the results were not good. At a very early age, Dr. Brandon recalled his uncle’s two prize mules die after a lay person had performed a castration. The uncle, suffering a huge economic loss, was devastated. This was just one such event that inspired a young person to pursue a career in Veterinary Medicine.

In the 1960’s there were no veterinary Schools in Louisiana. After obtaining a degree in Animal Science at LSU, application was make to Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. Acceptance was a dream come true.

After Veterinary College, Dr. Brandon entered active duty in the United States Army and served seven years as a Captain, Veterinary Corp. Duty stations included Fort Sam Houston, Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, and finally at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Brandon Veterinary Clinic was established in Leesville, La in September 1977. Its establishment is designed to provide a mixed practice treating not only companion animals, but also cattle, horses, exotics and many other species.

Dr. Brandon is married to an army brat, Paula Brandon, and he has three sons, Brian, Luke, and Jesse. Brian has followed in his Dad’s footsteps and is an Equine Veterinarian in Elgin, Texas. He has married Diana Escobar Brandon, also a Veterinarian and they gave Dr. Doug his first grandchildren “Addison Sophia Brandon” and “Matthew George Douglas Brandon.”

The practice is please to announce the arrival of Dr. Jesse Brandon and Dr. Amanda Brandon. Dr. Doug’s youngest son Dr. Jesse has just recently joined the practice and his wife Dr. Amanda has joined up as well. Dr. Jesse enjoys large animal medicine and surgery, and also small animal medicine and surgery. Dr. Amanda specializes in exotic animal medicine and surgery, as well as small animal medicine and surgery.
